Recently there was a map making the rounds of the Internet showing the
most popular second and third languages in each state in the U.S. Spanish is usually second, but a variety of languages are the third most popular language in a state. Who would have though German is so popular in so much of the country?
Of course, I wanted to do a Canadian version. Here are the most popular mother-tongues in each province, other than English and French, based on
census data from 2011:
- The asterisk indicates languages that also beat one of the official languages.
- Inuktitut is first overall in Nunavut.
- Yes, I know "Chinese" is a family of languages, but not everyone specifies which variation on the census
- Cree is barely behind German in Saskatchewan, and they both beat French.
Across all of Canada, Chinese is third. The numbers are: English, 18,858,975; French, 7,054,970; Chinese 1,072,555. After that, Punjabi, Spanish, German and Italian all have numbers in the low 400,000s.
